Bruxism, i.e., chronic teeth grinding, can put undue stress on your teeth and jaw, leading to problems with jaw stiffness and pain, tooth sensitivity, tooth damage, tension headaches, and other painful symptoms. At Simply Wellness Dental in Vancouver, BC, we offer BOTOX for bruxism near me to help manage this condition. BOTOX relaxes the jaw muscles responsible for clenching and grinding to ease your symptoms.
In this post, Drs. Adi Nokiani, Eric Quan, and Jason Park outline a 5-step guide to achieving relief through BOTOX bruxism treatment:
Our team will schedule a thorough evaluation of your mouth to assess your condition. We’ll examine your teeth and jaw, take note of your symptoms, and review your oral and medical history to help determine the underlying cause of your bruxism so we can make an informed decision concerning treatment. If we feel BOTOX can be helpful in achieving bruxism relief, we’ll discuss your options for treatment.
To ease bruxism symptoms, BOTOX is injected into the masseter muscles on either side of your jaw. These are the muscles responsible for jaw movement and chewing. We’ll consider factors like muscle size and strength, and the severity of your symptoms to determine the best injection sites and dosage. A dose of 25 – 30 units of BOTOX per side is generally sufficient to ease moderate bruxism symptoms. The injections are administered in our dental office and generally take 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
Although no recovery time is needed for BOTOX treatments, there are post-treatment dos and don’ts you should be aware of to achieve optimal results. Avoid bending or lying down for the first 4 hours after receiving the injections. You can resume normal activities as long as they’re not strenuous in nature, such as gym workouts, heavy lifting, etc., for at least 24 hours. Avoid rubbing your face or massaging the injection sites, as it can cause BOTOX to migrate to areas unintended for treatment.
Masseter BOTOX treatments work gradually, so don’t expect “instant” results. It may take several days to a week before you notice less tension and stress in your jaw. Within 2 to 4 weeks, you’ll experience significant improvement in jaw pain, clenching, grinding, soreness, and other bruxism symptoms. As your masseter muscles fully relax, your lower jawline may even appear slimmer.
BOTOX isn’t a permanent fix for bruxism, but it can provide temporary relief for months. BOTOX results generally last between 3 and 6 months, after which follow-up injections will be needed to keep painful bruxism symptoms at bay. For longer-lasting results, we recommend combining BOTOX with the use of a custom night guard, jaw exercises, or stress management techniques to keep your condition under control.
